How To Recycle
Did you know how easy it is to recycle at home?
Just take the time to set up a home recycling centre. It doesn’t have to be very big at all and it will only take you about an hour. Then start on these simple steps.
Buy your Blue Bags or clear bags. They can be purchased at any of these convenient locations:
Make sure to have a bag for each section of recycling. You will need 2 bags, one bag for your containers and one bag for your paper. Don’t forget to bundle your corrugated cardboard as this can be recycled too.
Sort them out! Make sure you check the labels on your plastics. Recool can only take #1 PET plastic bottles and #2 HDPE plastic bottles. Rinse the food, beverage, metal and aluminum cans. Wash the aluminum foil and food trays, then flatten the trays and crumble the foil. Glass food and beverage bottle and jars should be rinsed out and lids taken off. Milk cartons and juice tetra packs (juice boxes) should be rinsed out, flattened and placed inside an empty carton. All these items can be placed loose in the bag. In your paper Blue Bag you can put newspapers, flyers, paperbacks, magazines, junk mail, paper egg cartons and household fine paper. The corrugated cardboard (with the ‘corrugated’ waffle) should be bundled together. Flatten them and tie them together with string into bundles no bigger than 3’ x 2’ x 1’. You can recycle your plastic grocery bags as well, but you cannot put them in your Blue Bag. You can take them to Quality Market or Wal-Mart where they get recycled.
Put them out on the curb on your designated Blue Bag day, which should run every second week.
It's just that easy!
If you are planning to drop by the one of the conveniently located depots, everything needs to be separated into the different type of recyclable it is. The depots have large protected green bins that are labelled with what they contain so you will have no trouble finding where the items are going. The depots are located in 3 convenient locations to service the city. One is located on Front Street between McIntyre and Van Horne Streets, one on Mountdale Avenue at Walsh Street across from Westgate High School and the last one is at the John Street Landfill. They are open from 8:00am till 6:30pm Monday to Saturday and are closed Sundays and all holidays. The depots are for residential use only.
All this information is located on your garbage pick up schedule as well.
